In Bed with My Dreams and Delusions is a self-portrait series reflecting on my transition into adulthood as a young woman of colour who left home as a teen to chase my dreams. From Taiwan to America now Canada, throughout this journey solitude and confusion are what I am constantly navigating through. Fatigue along with other emotions accompany me.
I developed this project to use the nuance of self-portraiture as a way to analyze how I am perceived and to initiate the reclamation of my agency. I use medium format black and white film with an intuitive approach. Movements within a staged narrative are used as a vehicle to express the ambiguity that I hide behind rather than dealing with the reality I face. The intimate setups are where I daydream about how to fill the void, my bed and my bathroom. While I tended to keep the compositions minimal, I inserted elements I encounter in my everyday: saran wrap, shower curtain, bamboo. They add a sense of fluidity and rhythm to the overall flow of this series.
